National Coordinator

Musu Bakoto Sawo

Musu is a feminist and human rights lawyer and defender with over 18 years of experience in children’s and women's rights advocacy and activism. She holds a Master of Laws in Human Rights and Democratisation in Africa and a Master of Global Affairs in International Peace Studies and Gender Studies. With over 10 years of leadership experience in program and policy development, advocacy, and fundraising, Musu has made significant contributions in non-profit organisations and public institutions in The Gambia and across the African continent. Throughout her career, she has gained extensive experience working with women, girls, and marginalised and oppressed groups and communities. She has applied this knowledge to contribute to capacity building, research, networking, program development, and practical engagement with women and youth-led initiatives. Musu has collaborated with grassroots, national, and international organisations, while leading and supporting the establishment and growth of several social change organisations and initiatives in The Gambia. In these roles, she has been dedicated to empowering women and girls by equipping them with human rights knowledge while advocating for their involvement in decision-making positions, including active participation in politics and peacebuilding. She is deeply committed to nurturing leadership, promoting diversity, equity, and addressing issues of racial, social, and gender justice within the philanthropic landscape. Musu is the recipient of numerous international and African human rights awards, including the 2018 Commonwealth Points of Light from Her Late Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, the 2020 Daily Trust African of the Year, and the Vera Chirwa Award from the Center for Human Rights at the University of Pretoria, South Africa. All these awards recognize her work for women and girls in The Gambia and beyond, particularly in relation to harmful traditional practices such as female genital mutilation (FGM).

Co-National Coordinator

Haddy Jonga

Haddy is a gender justice activist, development communications practitioner and sexual and reproductive rights specialist. She has over 8 years of extensive experience working in human rights, gender and youth programming, with skills in advocacy, strategic communications, project management and partnerships. Her academic background and research interests are at the intersection of sexual and reproductive rights in Africa, development communications and policy advocacy for gender equality and women’s empowerment. Haddy has held programming and communications roles within the gender, international development and science communication sectors, serving in roles at the Medical Research Council Unit The Gambia at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, West African Network for Tuberculosis, AIDs and Malaria, United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) in The Gambia and The Girl Generation. She has also served in various capacities in national, international, and community-based organisations including the National Child and Youth Advisory Board on Violence against Children, and the Board of Directors of the Child Protection Alliance both in The Gambia. She is currently a Council Member for the Women Living Under Muslim Laws solidarity network. She uses her strong skills and rich background in gender programming and development communications to deliver consultancy services to international development actors, government institutions and non-profit organisations. Haddy’s remarkable track record and strong interest in promoting the rights of women and children, earned her recognition in 2015 as one of the 27 most outstanding emerging young women leaders of Africa by the Moremi Initiative for Women’s Leadership in Africa.

Programme Manager

Isatou Jallow

Isatou is a passionate advocate for empowering girls and young women. A graduate of the University of North Georgia with a focus on political science and a minor in French, Isatou brings a global perspective, having grown up in Senegal and completed high school in Ethiopia. Her commitment extends beyond her professional role, as she actively engages with her community to combat child marriages, FGM/C, and all forms of gender-based violence. Isatou's dedication is evident in her work at Think Young Women, where she contributes to building skills, amplifying voices, and championing women's rights, reflecting her drive to effect positive change in the realms of leadership, awareness, and advocacy.

Finance Manager

Binta Sanneh

Binta has over 12 years of experience working in the Finance and accounting sector. Her experience includes preparation of project budgets and financial reports, compiling income and expenditure accounts and monitoring cash flow, substantiating financial transactions by auditing documents, maintaining accounting controls by preparing and recommending policies and procedures, and securing financial information by completing database backups. She holds an AAT Advanced Level 4 Certificate and is currently pursuing an ACCA, as well as a Bachelor of Laws.

Senior Programme Officer

Oumie Jagne

Oumie is a passionate advocate for empowering young women and girls in The Gambia. With a degree in Political Science from the University of The Gambia and a TAF Africa Leadership Academy Fellow, she fiercely advocates for women's equality, women in leadership, human rights advocacy, sexual and reproductive health rights, striving to make a meaningful impact. Her unwavering dedication shines through as she tirelessly works towards creating a world where every individual, regardless of gender, can live free from harm and discrimination. Her passion and drive serve as a beacon of hope in the fight for a more just and equitable society. Oumie is deeply committed to combating gender-based violence and ending all forms of violence against women and girls, including FGM/C, making her a true advocate for justice and equality. In addition to her advocacy work, she is also an entrepreneur.

Programme and Finance Associate

Rose Lawal

Rose commenced her professional journey as a Classroom Teacher from 2015 to 2020, showcasing dedication and leadership. Progressing swiftly, she assumed the roles of Class Teacher and Head of the Department from 2020 to 2021. This journey propelled her into the advocacy world, joining the impactful team at Think Young Women. As a Programme and Finance Intern, Rose continues to excel in event planning and proposal formulation. Her impactful stint as a Program Assistant at Africa Children Rejoice, a small non-profit organisation showcased her skills in program coordination and policy implementation. A Gambian educator and programmer, Rose holds a Diploma in Early Childhood Development from Gambia College and a Diploma in Law from Gambia Technical Training Institute, epitomising dedication and leadership. Adept at organising tasks under stress, Rose Lawal is a dynamic individual committed to creating positive change in her community through education and program development.

Programme Assistant

Sukai John

Sukai is a final-year law student at the University of The Gambia, currently serving as the Vice President of the Law Students’ Association (LSA). As an alumna of the 6th cohort of TYW’s mentorship programme, Sukai has demonstrated a strong commitment to empowering young women and advocating for gender equality. She represented the organization at the African Girls Summit in Niger in 2021, showcasing her leadership and advocacy skills on an international platform. Sukai also volunteered at the American Corner in The Gambia, where she contributed to educational programs for students and youths. She has also interned at the Food Safety and Quality Authority, gaining valuable experience in regulatory compliance, and at the Child Protection Alliance, where she furthered her passion for child rights and protection. In 2021, Sukai was selected as a TuWezeshe Fellow, an experience that further developed her knowledge of the sexual and reproductive health rights of women and girls. Through this fellowship, she engaged with other women on critical issues such as women's rights and the fight against harmful traditional practices.

Programme and Communications Assistant

Fatima Gomez

Fatima was part of the first cohort of the Adolescent Girl Advisory Council for the Global Fund for Women, a Think Young Women volunteer and a young Nerve Center Leader of the Education Plus Initiative. She is also the Country Representative of the Global Youth Consortium against FGM. Fatima is passionate about girls' empowerment, gender equality, and Feminism. She has been actively involved in the activism space both nationally and internationally. Fatima is a final year law student at the University of The Gambia. She is motivated to address the discrimination, injustices and inequality that women and girls are challenged with each day and wants to place these issues before the right agencies and institutions with the power to change this reality. As a young feminist, Fatima continues to promote her visions in all the platforms she is involved in. She believes that, no matter how long it takes, women and girls will get the liberation they deserve. Just one day, it shall happen!

Isatou Jallow

Isatou Jallow is a youth leader, feminist, and an advocate for human rights and social justice. She has a strong passion for advocating for the advancement of the rights of women, girls and children. Isatou has been actively involved in advocacy for social change since middle school. Over the years, she has mentored many young girls both in schools and at community level on sexual reproductive health and rights, Gender based violence, and leadership skills. Isatou is currently pursuing a bachelor’s degree in development studies at the University of The Gambia. She has been supporting the communications team at TYW since 2022.
